CSFT purchased this 23 hectare site in 2007 to create a new woodland. About 10 hectares have been planted with the remainder to be completed over the next two planting seasons. The new woodland is composed of 75% native broadleaves and 25% amenity conifers, which help blend it with an existing conifer plantation which sits on the skyline behind the site.

Project aims:

  • Sequester (capture) carbon through tree planting
  • Create 23 hectares of new woodland
  • Improve the landscape
  • Develop the Topps Wood Education Project
  • Involvement of Denny High School in planting work and participation in a wider educational project within the site

Two small watercourses which run through the site into the River Carron have been left with unplanted margins and the design of the woodland has tried to accentuate the features.

It is believed that, before the Carron Bridge was built, the “road” continued west through the site past a, now ruined, farmstead. This route has been left open as a reminder of the history of the site.

As the site is located within a very rural area there is little surrounding population with only 4 properties overlooking the site. However, as people have been using it for informal access, an additional gate has been installed.
