Denny High School, with c1400 pupils, is 8 km from Falkirk centre and serves an area of 64 sq km.

In 2004, the Scottish Executive decided that Denny High School should be rebuilt. By Spring 2009, the new school was completed on the Herbertshire playing fields on the eastern outskirts of the town.

The relocation raised concerns about safe and sustainable travel to the new school. Local residents highlighted a range of barriers to the provision of safe routes for both cyclists and pedestrians and suggested improvements to the existing access network to encourage pupils and parents to utilise sustainable forms of transport.

With funding secured, a feasibility study revealed:

  • More pupils would choose to travel to school in a sustainable fashion if barriers to access (both physical and perceived) had been removed
  • People would feel safer using ‘off road’ routes due to the introduction of lighting and improving sight lines along the length of the paths
  • People would be able to use the paths all year round due to introduction of lighting and improvement to path surfaces
  • Cyclists and wheelchair users would find access to and along routes easier due to the provision of ramps at key locations

Project (Phase 1) achievements:

  • A set of steps replaced with a 100m ramp
  • 10m of cycle ramp to existing steps installed
  • 1025m of paths widened to 2.5m
  • 33 new lighting columns installed
  • 8 new underpass lights installed
  • 25m of 1.2m wide connecting paths created
  • 90m of 2m wide paths created
  • Vegetation managed
  • 3 new litter bins installed
