Torbothie Community Woodland
Summary
This Central Scotland Forest Trust owned woodland is within easy reach of both public transport and road links. It is suitable for short circular or longer walks.
Terrain
There are approximately 1.5km (0.9 miles) of surfaced paths on mainly flat ground, although there are some gentle slopes.
Estimated Duration
You could spend up to an hour exploring the woodland. However, you could extend your stay by visiting the adjacent Cairneyhead woodland.
Local Facilities
Small shop and parking on Cemetery Road. Other shops, restaurants and public toilets in the centre of Shotts approximately 1.8km (1.1 miles) away.
Accessing Torbothie Woodland
There are 5 entrances, however, the suggested start and finish point is from Cemetery Road, where limited on-street parking is available.
Possible Routes and Available Paths
The paths are firm and stable, 1m to 1.5m wide and are made from stone and dust. However, due to weathering, some sections are rougher underfoot with large loose stones and chippings. There are benches and resting places throughout the woodland. Stout footwear is recommended.
Site Highlights
This site was previously owned by British Coal and was purchased by CSFT in 1997. Much of it has been planted as woodland and footpaths follow the route of a disused mineral railway line which runs west to east. A mixture of conifers and deciduous trees have been planted including hazel, beech, alder and rowan. The marshy grassland areas are home to a variety of sedges, rushes and wildflowers as well as many species of butterfly.

Getting There
By Car:
Shotts is in the heart of Central Scotland just off the M8 at junction 5. Torbothie Community Woodland lies off Cemetery Road on the south east of Shotts. Limited on street parking is available on Cemetery Road.
By Bus:
Call Traveline on 0870 6082608.
By Train:
The train station at Shotts is accessible from Glasgow Central and Edinburgh. It is possible to take your cycle on this route, but this should be confirmed in advance of your journey.
