Little Boghead Village Nature Park, Bathgate

Summary

This pleasant local nature park, situated on the outskirts of Bathgate, is a perfect spot to enjoy a variety of habitats and wildlife.

Terrain

There are approx. 0.53 km (0.33 miles) of surfaced paths and 0.5 km (0.3 miles) of unsurfaced paths around the site. The site is mostly flat, however, there is a short incline up some timber edged steps to access the Roundel, the wooded high spot of the site.

Estimated Duration

Around 30 minutes can be spent wandering around Little Boghead, although you can pick up the Whiteside Circular Path (2.9 km / 1.8 miles) from the site, which will extend your visit.

Local Facilities

There are shops, cafes and public toilets in Bathgate town centre which is 1.5km (0.9 miles) away.

Accessing Little Boghead

Access to Little Boghead is from Sylvan Way. There is on-street parking for 4 - 6 cars in the parking area to the rear of the houses.

Possible Routes and Available Paths

The surfaced stone paths around the site are approx. 0.6m (2ft) wide. There is a short stretch of tarmac path approx. 1m (3ft) wide, however, vegetation has encroached making this appear narrower. The unsurfaced paths are narrow, grass tracks, which can be wet and muddy in places. The boardwalk is approx. 1m (3ft) wide, with no sides or passing places.

Site Highlights

Little Boghead Nature Park contains a mix of habitats, all beneficial to wildlife. Explore the many small ponds, connected by a boardwalk, where you can see all sorts of pond life, as well as the many dragonflies that enjoy the surrounding wetland habitat. The Roundel is a small, mature broadleaf woodland, and the meadows are a lovely spot to enjoy the sight and smell of the wildflowers that appear in spring and summer.

Getting There

By Car: From Junction 4 of the M8, follow theB7002 towards Bathgate. On the outskirts of Bathgate, follow the diversions in place for Whiteside Industrial Estate. At the entrance to the industrial estate, Sylvan Way is signposted immediately ahead.

By Bus: For information on options please call Traveline on 0870 608 2608.

By Train: Bathgate Station is approx. 1.5km (0.9 miles) away from the site. Trains run regularly from Edinburgh to Bathgate. See www.nationalrail.co.uk for further information.
