Common Darter dragonfly
Summary This formerly CSFT owned woodland is close to both road links and public transport. It can also be accessed from the North Calder Heritage Trail (NCHT) and National Cycle Route 75 (NCR 75).
Terrain
There's approx. 0.9 km (1.5 miles) of flat surfaced paths with a very steep section descending to the North Calder Water. Track becomes rough grass after access point at south of site.
Estimated Duration
You can spend up to an hour exploring this 7 hectare woodland. However, your visit can be extended if you follow the North Calder Heritage Trail or the NCR 75.
Local Facilities
There's a general store on Forrest Street, with toilets, other shops, cafes and restaurants in central Airdrie, approximately 2 miles away.
Accessing Wester Moffat
We recommend that you access the woodland from Katherine Park, the entrance to which is on Forrest Street (A89), where there is limited on-street parking available.
Possible Routes and Available Paths
The surfaced path is mostly firm and stable, varying in width from 1.2m to 2.2m, and is made from a variety of surfaces including stone and whin dust, toptrec and leocatic. There is only one path running through the site which eventually joins the North Calder Heritage Trail down by the river at the access point. So, even if you extend your visit by walking some of the Trail, you will have to retrace your steps. Due to the height difference between the path at river level and the surrounding buildings, access onto the site is only possible via the designated paths and access points.
Site Highlights
This mostly mature, broadleaved woodland is well placed to explore the wider area either by picking up the NCR 75, the Glasgow to Edinburgh Sustrans cycle route, or the North Calder Heritage Trail, which is a 10 mile linear route from Coatbridge to Caldercruix which runs through the region's industrial past. Getting There By Car: Airdire is in the heart of Central Scotland, accessible from junction 6 of the M8 at Newhouse. Wester Moffat lies off Towers Road on the south east of Airdrie. Limited on-street parking is available on Forrest Street. By Bus: For information on local services call Traveline on 0870 608 2608. By Train: The train station at Drumgelloch (from Glasgow Queen Street) is less than 1 mile away and is on the NCR 75 which runs past the site.
