Possible Routes and Available Paths
There is an extensive network of firm and stable paths, 2.2m - 2.4 m wide. There are some natural, narrow grass tracks through the more established woodland. Benches and resting places are throughout the woodland. All the well-signposted routes, leading from the Falkirk Wheel, allow you to experience the woodland and reach the Antonine Wall. There are no formal paths around the Wall and Fort, but the site is well-maintained grassland. Site Highlights As well as the enjoyable woodland walks available, this site is in a fantastic location next to the Falkirk Wheel and the remains of a Roman Fort. The Falkirk Wheel is an exceptional feat of modern engineering, and is the only rotating boatlift in the world. It re-connected the Forth and Clyde Canal and the Union Canal and sits in a natural open amphitheatre. The visitor centre is well worth a visit, from where boat trips are available. The Antonine Wall is the largest relic of Roman occupation in Scotland and, although small, the Roman Fort at Roughcastle is very well preserved. The earthworks of its rampart and ditches are still clearly visible and, although the site is grassed over, this impressive landscape gives a vivid impression of what a Roman frontier must have looked like 2000 years ago. Getting There By Car: The Falkirk Wheel is accessible,by following the signs, from both the M9, junction 8, and from the M80/A80, junction 4. There is plenty of parking however, the main free car park is approximately 5-10 minutes walk from the Wheel. By Train & Bus: From either Falkirk Grahamston or Falkirk High Stations take the First Bus No 3 to the Wheel. For further information contact Traveline Scotland on 0870 608 2608.
