Summary

This CSFT owned site lies within easy reach of road links and is suitable for a linear, or a longer circular, walk.

Terrain

Approximately 3.8km (2.4 miles) of surfaced paths and 3.6km (2.2 miles) of unimproved paths. Flat, with a gradual incline towards Seafield.

Estimated Duration

Up to two hours can be spent exploring the site, but this could be extended by completing the Easter Breich circular route.

Local Facilities

12 parking places at the main entrance. Shop in Seafield village with others, cafes and toilets in Livingston, approx. 3km (1.8 miles) away.

Accessing Easter Breich

The suggested start and finish point is from the car park off Fraser Avenue in Kirkton Campus.

Possible Routes and Available Paths

The surfaced paths are firm and stable, 1m to 1.4m wide, but narrowing to c50cm at one point. The grass tracks can get wet and muddy. The wooden bridge is 1m wide with no ramp. There is a bench at the main entrance. The site is linear, so you will need to retrace your steps. For a circular route, follow the path to Seafield and, at the access point, follow the waymarkers to the left onto an unsurfaced path. Just before the road, turn left onto a surfaced path at Oakbank Cottages to get back to the bridge and the car park.

Site Highlights

The main path follows the River Almond, to the edge of Seafield village. From the highest point, view the "Five Sisters", 5 oil shale bings, which are a reminder of the area's industrial past. The new areas of woodland include Ash, Birch and Hawthorn. There is a well-established Sitka plantation and Willow and Alder on the pond's island. The surrounding grassland and mixed woodland is a great habitat for butterflies and bumble bees. Roe deer, foxes, rabbits and hares may also be seen.
