Community Project Fund Awards
26 March 2009
28 exciting projects are going to share over £5100 from CSFT's Community Projects Fund which, each year, supports a wide range of community-initiated environmental projects.
This year, 60 community groups and schools were inspired to apply for the fund and the enthusiasm and creativity of projects coming direct from people who want to improve their local area was fantastic.
The assessment panel awarded 15 applicants full funding (9 community and 6 school projects) for woodland and hedgerow improvement schemes, orchard and pond creation and allotments in school grounds.
A further 11 applications received partial funding and 2 community groups who applied for funding to brighten their local park were given bluebell bulbs.
Combined together these projects will make a significant contribution to establishing the Central Scotland Forest.
Examples include the Germinators gardening club at St Margaret's Primary School in Falkirk, which has benefited from a donation to purchase bulbs, shrubs, scented plants and wildflower seeds to increase seasonal interest in the school garden and provide food for wildlife throughout the year.
In North Lanarkshire, St Lucy's Garden Project in Cumbernauld, have received funds to purchase tools, a polytunnel, vegetable seeds and plants to create an allotment to provide vegetables for use in the school cookery club and canteen to encourage healthy eating.
The Wonderful Wild Plants project by Forth & District Community Activities Group in South Lanarkshire has received funding for an arts project that will raise awareness of plants and conservation issues in the surrounding countryside, including a number of walks around the village to provide inspiration for a series of flower arranging courses.
Westfield Primary School Green Team Tree Awareness, West Lothian, has received money to purchase native tree saplings to create a small woodland area and improve the bio-diversity in the school grounds as well as willow roods to produce material for craft projects.
Well done to them all!
