Communities turn back time at the Antonine Wall
15 April 2010
Local families from Croy and Twechar spent the day as Romans at a family day on Saturday 10th April to celebrate the Antonine Wall which runs through the local area.
Visitors took part in a host of activities and educational games, having the opportunity to dress up as a Roman as well as trying their hand at some Roman games. They also watched the Antonine Guard carry out Roman training drills and Roman artwork created by pupils from the local primary schools in Croy and Kilsyth was on display.
Around 50 people then set off on a guided walk along the Antonine Wall, across Bar Hill to Twechar, led by a piper and marching soldiers of the Antonine Guard. On arrival, there was more fun to be had with face painting, kid's art workshops and a fun fair.
Gillian Barrie, Sustainable Development Officer for environmental charity Central Scotland Forest Trust, said: "We have recently finished a piece of work which looked at how access to the Antonine Wall could be improved and the family day was a fantastic way to round off the project.
"There was a great turnout and we would like to thank all those involved in the organisation for making the day such a success."
