Local Charity Creates Wetland at Boghead Wood

08 January 2009

Environmental charity, Central Scotland Forest Trust, is urging locals to don their wellies and get their hands dirty to help create a wetland in Boghead Wood on Saturday 17th January.

On Saturday, from 11am to 2pm, volunteers will be encouraged to help dig out shallow ponds that will attract wetland birds, insects and invertebrates to the area.

Simon Rennie, chief executive of CSFT, said: "We are keen to get as many people as possible from the local community involved in the creation of the wetland at Boghead Wood. All tools, equipment instruction and supervision for digging will be provided, but helpers should be suitably dressed for the cold weather and hardwearing boots or wellies are essential to work on the wet ground.

"The project to create a new wetland area will enhance biodiversity in the area and attract a wide variety of birds and insects. Wildflowers and native shrub will also be planted to encourage sustainable, mature woodland for visitors to enjoy."

The wetland dig is part of a £50,000 regeneration project taking place to improve two-and-a-half hectares of woodland, which has already seen the woodland thinned of non-native and suppressed trees, and the paths and entranceways upgraded.
