Denny School Celebrates GIS Day 2008

11 December 2008

Sixty pupils from Denny High School joined forces with a local environmental regeneration charity to celebrate Geography Awareness Week in November.

Central Scotland Forest Trust (CSFT) and the local pupils joined hundreds of geography professionals across the globe to celebrate Geography Awareness Week and World GIS (Geographic Information Services) Day.

Abigail Page, GIS Officer at CSFT, visited Denny High School. She said: "These events provide a great opportunity to share innovations in geography with a wider audience and inspire young geographers to study using modern geographical technology.

"Throughout the day, Standard Grade students had the opportunity to use computers to view aerial photography and mapping of both local areas and worldwide places of interest. The pupils were introduced to the concepts of GIS and applications of the technology in everyday life, from shopping to travel, which helped them put geography in the context of their own lives."

A number of students were also given the opportunity to use hand held GPS receivers within the school grounds. The E-Trex Legend units were recently gifted to CSFT from Garmin for use with community and school groups. Using the devices, students were able to experience first-hand how to navigate to locations using the satellite network.
