A great day for the environment
06 December 2007
Over 700 trees were planted in one weekend in Armadale last month by local school children.
The two day event in November saw over 100 school pupils, from four schools in the Armadale area, along with members of the local community plant trees at Blackmoss Village Nature Park. The local foresters included David Kerr, chair of Blackmoss Nature Park.
The successful days were organised by environmental-led organisation Central Scotland Forest Trust (CSFT) and Blackmoss Nature Park Group. The aim was to bring the local community together in a bid to improve the woodland habitat and ecological diversity of the area.
CSFT invited local families to get involved and help benefit the community, as part of an ongoing process to replace foreign conifer trees with native Scottish broad leaf trees such as oak, rowan and birch.
Simon Rennie, chief executive of CSFT said the day was a huge success, with a wonderful feel of community spirit: "The event has brought the community together, and helped to secure enjoyable local woodland for generations."
In a proposal to create a more pleasurable and welcoming woodland for the local community, as well as tourists visiting Scotland's forests, funding for the project has been secured by the Forestry Commission Scotland's Woodlands In and Around Towns Scheme, West Lothian Council, CSFT and SNH.
