Cedarbank School in Livingston, West Lothian, a school for approximately 40 children with learning difficulties, applied to the Community Project Fund for a grant of £250 towards improving a unsafe and degraded concrete courtyard into a ‘Green Zone'.   The project involves the construction of raised planters to create a series of wildlife habitats including:

  • Nectar bar to attract insects such as butterflies
  • Bird Tuck Shop to feed and encourage birds
  • Seasonal Garden
  • Sunny sunflower corner
  • A shallow pond to create a miniature water world

Pupils were involved in gathering ideas, researching, planning, designing and costing the project and the raised planters are designed so everyone can get their hands dirty looking after the garden.  The school also plan to install a compost bin and rainbutt to promote the minimisation of waste which will help towards the retention of their Eco-School status.
