Antonine Wall Access Report

25 March 2010

The Antonine Wall was recently designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and now forms part of the Frontiers of the Roman Empire World Heritage Site, which includes Hadrian's Wall in England and the German Limes.

While the designation raised the profile of the Wall, it also raised expectations amongst local people about what it could mean for their communities. Recognising the barriers that exist to accessing the Antonine Wall in both intellectual and physical terms, Central Scotland Forest Trust (CSFT), acting on behalf of a project Steering Group, appointed Small Town & Rural Development Group to engage with communities along a defined section of the Antonine Wall, to consider what the Wall meant to their communities, what could be done to improve access to and along the Wall and also ways to celebrate and promote this shared piece of heritage.

The project ran started in September 2009, with the majority of the community and schools engagement work taking place over November and December. The project will culminate in a free family fun day taking place on Saturday 10th April in Croy and Twechar.

The final report on the findings is attached below.
